Oh, Mom…

I really debated posting this. I try to keep private the lives of people that have chosen to stay off the internet. But this is just too good to not talk about. I wont be divulging any major details, but I’m including a bit of an email I got from my mother this morning. First, though, you need some background.

Christmas has always been a special time in my family, particularly for my mom.  Christmas music starts playing in my house the day after Thanksgiving (or, when she thinks she can get away with it, on Thanksgiving) and sometimes I feel like it doesn’t stop until my birthday (early February). We decorate the tree as a family as soon as possible and sometimes, like this year, we end up decorating the tree on Thanksgiving night. That tradition, of putting up the tree, is probably the most important chunk of time in my mom’s year. She likes her traditions.

Not opening gifts before Christmas is one of those things. I don’t know if it can really be called a tradition, but its a rule that cannot and will not be broken. I think I can remember only one time when I opened a gift early. My brother and I must have thrown some wild tag-team-tantrum or something, I don’t remember, but it must have been good.

Flash forward again to this year, yesterday, in particular. Heading out the door in the morning I pull on my jacket and try to zip it up – half of the zipper comes off in my hand. Good thing I just got a new jacket.

Oh crap, mom took that, and I’m getting it for Christmas.

It’s wrapped. Probably under the tree already.

I cant open gifts early… but this is Minnesota. Last Wednesday it was 6 degrees below (F) with wind chill factored in. She has to cave, doesn’t she?

I sent an email to my parents shared address, hoping for mercy. Here’s what I got in response:

Hi–
Sorry to hear about your jacket zipper–I really don’t want to give you the new one–How are the snaps working?  Some jackets only have snaps, so probably it is kinda like that–your new jacket only has buttons–so not much different.  Think of it as helping you get use to the new one.

MOM!

COME ON!

HOW ARE THE *SNAPS* WORKING???

SERIOUSLY?!?!
